New Plaza for Maillardville Community Centre
With the new 2,000 square metre (22,000 square foot) community centre now fully operational, and demolition complete on the old facility, construction has commenced for the outdoor space.
The proposed plans include:
- Tiered seating for social connections and small gatherings, transforming a sloped portion of the site into social space.
- Creative play for children through climbable rubber surfacing and a concrete slide.
- Cultural and historic connection through a direct physical link to Laval Square, as well as timber seating elements to reference the milling and logging history of the neighbourhood and garden elements that reflect the rich cultural history of the area.
- A future mural across the existing retaining wall at the north end of the plaza that reflects the neighbourhood’s history.
- A social plaza with movable furniture, shade elemnts, court games and timber elements that could provide seating and/or a stage for small events or performances for up to 100 people.
- An open lawn area for flexible, passive use such as picnics or outdoor recreation activities.
The plans also include improved lighting, electrical receptacles, landscaped buffers and parking.
