Mission: To provide a range of emergency responses, fire protection and educational programs designed to protect lives and property from the adverse effects of fire, sudden medical emergencies or exposure to dangerous conditions created by people or nature.
Providing emergency response to fires is one of the Fire/Rescue Department’s core roles and responsibilities in the City. The City’s firefighters are also highly-trained First Responders for medical emergencies, natural gas leaks, hazardous material incidents and other highly specialized response needs. The staff also provide Fire Prevention and Education Programs, and they carry out inspections of multi-family residences and commercial buildings. They also do fire investigations to determine the cause of fires and check building plans for compliance to the Fire Code related to life safety issues.
In addition to these critical emergency response requirements, the Coquitlam Fire and Rescue Department is very active in promoting Fire Prevention and Education Programs. Through community liaison initiatives, the Fire Department provides:
- school education programs;
- instruction on how to prevent fires;
- information on how to identify risks; and
- assistance with the development of pre-incident fire plans.
