City Government

The City of Coquitlam is governed by Mayor and Council and the City departments. As well, the community is involved through participation on committees and through consultation.

The City of Coquitlam administration is made up of departments with core areas of responsibility.  These include the Manager's Office, Corporate Services, Fire & Rescue, Leisure and Parks, Planning and Development, Strategic Initiatives, Engineering and Public Works and policing services provided by the RCMP Coquitlam detachment.

How Your City Works

The City provides a range of services such as water and sewer, garbage collection and road maintenance, but it is also involved in strategic planning, growth management, recreation and financial planning.  The City follows procedures and requirements outlined in the Local Government Act, which includes a public hearing process and how bylaws are developed and passed.

History

Coquitlam's earliest residents were the Coast Salish First Nations people.  The City began to grow into the community it is today with the opening of Fraser Mills, when settlers from Quebec brought their mill experience and their French heritage.  Since then, Coquitlam has continued to expand into the multicultural, family-oriented community it is today.
