Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find out about the status of the position I applied for?

Positions usually take about four weeks to fill.  Resumes are usually short listed within two weeks after the close of the competition and candidates contacted shortly afterwards.  Because of the large volume of resumes we receive, we regret that only short listed candidates are notified.

Does the City accept general resumes and how long do resumes stay on file?

We do accept general resumes for all positions within the City except for Firefighting positions.  General resumes are kept in our files for three months.

What positions are available at the City?

All available positions are listed under Current Job Postings, on our Jobs Board.

Can I volunteer to work to gain experience?

Volunteer experiences are not offered for work that is currently being done by staff.

I am a student looking for summer work.  Does the City hire students for the summer?

We do have job opportunities in the summer and these positions are listed on our website and our Jobs Board.

Do I have to fill out an application form if I have already sent in a resume?

We prefer that an application form is completed but a  resume and cover letter would be sufficient.

Do I have to take any tests as part of the recruitment process?

Each recruitment process may be different, but as a general rule we employ testing in different capacities as part of our recruitment process.

Does the City of Coquitlam require potential candidates to go through a criminal record search?

All positions at the RCMP detachment as well as positions that deal with or come into contact with children, require a satisfactory criminal record search prior to an offer of employment being made.

Do employees of the City get preference over outside applicants in a recruitment competition?

In accordance with our collective agreement, permanent employees of the City get first consideration for positions posted.  If there are no qualified internal individuals, we will consider candidates external to the City.

Does the City accept resumes for Firefighter positions?

We do not accept resumes for Firefighter positions outside of an active recruitment process.  Resumes received will be returned.  Further information on firefighter qualifications
