Emergency Social Services

Emergency Social Services (ESS), sponsored by the Ministry of Human Resources, provides basic assistance for those who are forced to leave there homes because of fire, floods, earthquakes or other emergencies.  This assistance includes food, lodging, clothing, family reunification and emotional support.

In Coquitlam, it is the responsibility of ESS to mobilize reception centres where the above services will be provided to the community. The location of these centres will be broadcast to the public via the media as they become available.

Evacuation Reception Centres

If you evacuate your home it is recommended that you register with a Reception Centre. This is also important if you plan to stay with friends or relatives and not at one of the locations set up to house evacuees. It is important that your location is accounted for and emergency officials know that you have left the danger area.

Information about what to do and where to go will be provided by means of:

  • Media releases
  • Continuous information reports to local media

For more information on the ESS program in the province see the Emergency Social Services site of British Columbia
