Crime Prevention

Crime Prevention

While Coquitlam is a safe community that is ideal for families, no community can be completely free of crime.  However, there are several crime prevention programs that can help reduce the risks of crime.  The City of Coquitlam has several community-based crime prevention programs:

RCMP Citizens' Crime Watch Patrol

The Citizens Crime Watch Patrol is an RCMP crime prevention initiative.  The patrol is comprised of a network of dedicated volunteers who donate a minimum of six hours a month to assist the RCMP in the detection and deterrence of crime.

Crime Watch Patrols

  • Focus primarily on the business community, industrial sites, schools and parks as well as residential properties
  • Take place on designated evenings within specific areas
  • Follow the mandate of "observe and report"

To become a member of the Citizens Crime Watch Patrol you must:

  • Be a minimum of 16 years of age
  • Go through a security clearance and interview

The RCMP is continually looking for interested and dedicated individuals.  If you have a desire to improve the security and safety of your community we encourage you become a part of this popular community based crime prevention initiative.

Auto Theft

Thousands of vehicles are stolen from residential streets, car ports, garages and driveways each year. Did you know that:

  • Most thieves are amateurs and they take pride in stealing, not in the vehicles they drive
  • New vehicles are less popular targets than models that are five or six years old

ICBC and the local police in every community have joined forces to combat auto crime across British Columbia.  The primary aim of these joint efforts is to heighten awareness of and promote community-based prevention initiatives.

ICBC provides:

  • Valuable information on how you can prevent auto crime and fraud
  • Regional statistics on auto crime
  • Other information on community solutions to auto crime in your neighborhood
  • The provindial Block Watch Program website also provides valuable auto safety tips
