Community Involvement

Community Involvement

There are a wide variety of ways in which community members in Coquitlam can get involved in their community.  Being involved and active in the community means participating as a volunteer, participating as event sponsors, and ensuring businesses are fully accessible to people with disabilities and work towards gender equity in sports and physical activities in Coquitlam.

Community involvement also involves participating in community development by contributing feedback at Open Houses and in surveys, and by getting involved on Council Committees.

Recognizing the importance of addressing social as well as physical barriers to accessibility, Coquitlam's Accessibility Awards were expanded in 2002 to include Education, Employment, Accessible and Affordable Housing, Leisure and Recreation, and Volunteering.

These awards recognize exceptional contributions and special efforts made by business and community members who have initiated measures that address social as well as physical barriers for people with disabilities. We also hope that the awards will help to raise awareness of the importance of providing an accessible environment in our community, and we are working closely with local organizations to continue to promote improved accessibility.

Prior to 2002, the awards recognized measures designed to address physical access barriers, such as architectural changes. By expanding the categories in 2002, the awards contribute to taking steps to raise the profile of accessibility, increase understanding of the range of barriers that exist, and highlight measures that successfully promote full participation in the community for people with disabilities.

To qualify for an award, the candidate must be from a business, organization or an individual that provides service to the Coquitlam community and has implemented measures to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.
