John Furlong - CEO of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
Living Leadership based on VANOC's five core values: Trust, Team, Excellence, Sustainability and Creativity
As CEO, John Furlong was the leader behind the team that organized and delivered the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to positive reviews the world over. Helping to contribute to a better, stronger Canada has always been one of Furlong’s most resolute personal goals - he envisioned from the earliest days that the Games would be a real nation builder helping to improve the fabric of Canadian society. IOC President Jacques Rogge remarked about how Vancouver had taken on the Games in a way that was ‘unheard of in the Olympic movement,’ and considered them as belonging to all of Canada, not surprised that the Games had become a catalyst for national unity.
Furlong’s service to sport has landed him with numerous community awards, and in 2009, The Globe and Mail voted him as Canada’s Most Influential Sport Figure. On September 15, John Furlong received the Order of Canada for demonstrating sporting excellence to the world.
Furlong on values-based leadership: "If you are asking people to do things that they don't believe they can do, they have to trust you, care deeply and be truly connected to a meaningful vision."
