Westbound Highway 1 Temporary Nighttime Closure in Coquitlam/Cape Horn

Update: Wednesday, August 11, 2010

On Saturday, August 14, between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. Highway 1 westbound lanes between the Lougheed Highway exit and the Coleman on-ramp will be temporarily closed. Westbound traffic from the Port Mann Bridge and from the Mary Hill Bypass will be detoured onto Lougheed Highway, entering Highway 1 at the Coleman Avenue on-ramp, as shown on the map below.

These temporary detours are required to shift Highway 1 westbound lanes to the north onto the new and permanent lane alignment planned for this area, making way for continued construction of the new wider overpass across the rail lines.

Upcoming Change to HOV Lane Use Regulations

Updated: Thursday, April 8, 2010

As part of improving traffic flow and reducing delays related to construction for the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement (PMH1) Project, High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on Highway 1 will be open to all traffic between 7:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily. This temporary adjustment begins April 19, 2010 and applies to HOV lanes between Grandview Highway and the Port Mann Bridge (both east and westbound) for the balance of construction.

This HOV schedule adjustment is in place to minimize delays during nighttime lane closures, which are required for the widening of Highway 1 and rebuilding of several overpass and interchange structures.

Currently, during the nightly lane closure period, only one lane is legally available for general traffic. Since HOV traffic is significantly lower during the night, allowing all lanes to be used by general traffic will reduce construction-related delays and improve safety and efficiency for all vehicles.

What to Expect Beginning April 19, 2010:

  • The HOV lanes will continue to be designated for high occupancy vehicles from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. During this period, vehicles must have two or more occupants to travel in this lane.
  • From 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily, the HOV lanes will be open to all vehicles, regardless of the number of occupants.

This change will be in effect seven days a week for the duration of the PMH1 Project, which is on schedule for completion in 2013. HOV lanes are a valuable traffic measure for reducing congestion and encouraging carpooling. As such, the HOV lane usage restrictions will continue to be enforced during the daytime hours (6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.). During this time, there must be two or more persons in the vehicle to travel in the HOV lane.
