COQUITLAM, BC, July 31, 2007 – In the wake of recent concerns related to plans for Riverview Lands, Coquitlam Council reaffirmed its commitment to the recommendations in the Riverview Task Force Report at last night’s Council Meeting. Council and staff have also met with the Minister Responsible for Housing to gain clarification on the issues and raise awareness of the priorities for the City of Coquitlam.
“Riverview Lands are extremely important to our city and the region as a whole and we are working both with our community and the provincial government to promote the recommendations in the Riverview Task Force Report,” says Mayor Maxine Wilson. “The provincial government has assured us that public consultation will be integral to their planning processes, and that the community will ultimately decide the future for these lands. As well, we have their commitment that members of Council will be engaged in the provincial discussions related to this project.”
Coquitlam’s position on the Riverview Lands is outlined in the Task Force Report and it focuses on three key priorities:
- The land should remain publicly-owned to provide a sanctuary and residential treatment facility for people with mental illness;
- The heritage buildings, landscapes and arboretum should d be protected and preserved; and
- Market housing is not an option.
