Heritage & History

The name Coquitlam comes from the Coast Salish word "Kwikwetlem", which means "red fish up the river", acknowledging the importance of salmon to their culture. The Coast Salish peoples were the earliest residents of the Coquitlam region prior to European settlement. The kʷikʷəƛ̓əm people have long lived along the Fraser and Coquitlam rivers.
