Agency / Organization:
Immigrant Services Society of BC
This is a summer program for the most recently arrived newcomer children and teens (age 12+). It assists with positive adaptation and settlement in Coquitlam. The program provides tutoring in English vocabulary, reading, writing skills, and math skills preparatory to school entry in September. It also works with these newcomer learners through field trips, neighborhood exploration, skill building, and social and recreational opportunities to connect them with resources “close to home”. Over the summer the program introduces these newcomer learners to new sports and other recreational activities, art, etc. working with other students of their own age. Social, behavioral and cultural learning is also emphasized and supported. The program provides a daily opportunity to use and build English speaking skills – important preparation for learning the new culture while succeeding both socially and in school.
