Program Description:
ISSofBC has embarked on a multi-year community development / community capacity-building initiative targeting the Afghan, Bhutanese and other refugee communities – children, youth, women and seniors. Some of the current on-going activities include:
• School’s Out – Reaching for Success-Newcomer Children in the Tri-Cities – after school programming in Alderson and Lord Baden Powell Elementary Schools – target newcomer children ages 6-12 years old
• Summer Orientation Camp for Newcomer children and youth – 5 week, 5 days/week all day summer orientation camp for newcomer learners who have been in Canada less than one year – focus on social, academic and recreational programming - free
• Dr. Ramzia Fiaz works in Port Moody Senior Secondary School every second Friday 9:00 am – 2:30 pm (behavioural / cultural learning) counselling students selected by school staff
• Periodic interpreter supported parent forums at Coquitlam schools
• Seniors mentoring and training program
