Gas Leak North Road Coquitlam/Burnaby Boundary
Update: 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 8, 2012
FortisBC has reviewed the incident and informed the City of Coquitlam that the gas pipe that was dug up by the contractor's excavator was a ½-inch service pipeline abandoned sometime prior to 1969, when the adjacent 76-unit apartment building was constructed. The current apartment building (675 North Road) is served from gas service under Whiting Way (east of the property), and not from the gas main under North Road.
FortisBC has concluded that Coquitlam's contractor had taken all the necessary steps to ensure they avoided marked underground services. The abandoned service was not in FortisBC's records, and therefore was not reflected in BC OneCall's mapping records.
