Welcome the Salmon Home To Coquitlam On Oct. 23

by Heather Escaravage |

COQUITLAM, BC, Oct. 18, 2016 – Throngs of Coquitlam residents will celebrate the annual fall return of chum and coho salmon to Hoy Creek at the popular Salmon Come Home event Sunday.

Co-hosted by the City of Coquitlam and Hoy-Scott Watershed Society, the free family event will take place Oct. 23, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hoy Creek Hatchery and feature salmon viewing, live demonstrations, food, music, crafts, exhibits, and children’s activities, including a costume parade and storytelling.

Salmon Come Home has become an annual tradition in Coquitlam, and in 2015 attracted about 2,000 people. This year’s event has been added to the list of sanctioned community events that have been celebrating Coquitlam’s 125th anniversary throughout 2016.

The highlight of the event is witnessing the return of chum and coho salmon to the creek where they were spawned, after living most of their adult lives at sea. Prime viewing of the returning salmon is from mid-October to early November.

Attendees are advised to dress for the weather, as the event runs rain or shine. The Hoy Creek Hatchery is located in Hoy Creek Trail Linear Park, west of the City Centre Aquatic Complex at the corner of Pinetree Way and Guildford Way. Free parking will be available at Coquitlam City Hall, Pinetree Community Centre and Douglas College.

A map link and more information are available at www.hoyscottcreeks.org.

After Salmon Come Home, upcoming Coquitlam 125 sanctioned events will be the Coquitlam Craft Beer Festival’s Road to Conquer cancer fundraiser on Nov. 4 and the 36th Annual Coquitlam Christmas Craft Fair on Dec. 2.

A year of Coquitlam 125 activities will be capped off by the signature event Lights at Lafarge on Nov. 26, 2 – 5:30 p.m., featuring stunning light displays, performances, an artisan fair, and a special screening of the Coquitlam 125 film and legacy art project.

Details about Coquitlam 125 activities are posted at www.coquitlam125.ca/events.
