Pinetree Way Improvements Unveiled Nov. 2

by Heather Escaravage |

COQUITLAM, BC, Oct. 27, 2016 – Dramatic light columns and attractive public spaces will soon mark the entry to Coquitlam’s City Centre, and the community is invited to be on hand when the City “flips the switch” Wednesday evening.

Coquitlam will unveil a colourful and welcoming City Centre gateway on Nov. 2 in the Coquitlam City Hall Plaza (on the southwest corner of Pinetree Way and Guildford Way), starting at 6:35 p.m. with the illumination of the light columns, as well as many other features on Pinetree Way between Lougheed Highway and Guildford Way.

A narrated walking tour will follow, showcasing the new multi-use pathway with customized design and lighting features that have been constructed below the Millennium Line Evergreen Extension. This is an outdoor event that runs rain or shine, and parking is available under City Hall.

The unveiling marks the completion of most of the work on the Pinetree Way Enhancement Project, which began in spring 2015 following extensive public consultation. The City has appreciated the patience shown by area residents and businesses throughout the roadworks.

The project redesigned the stretch of Pinetree Way between Lougheed Highway and Town Centre Boulevard, bringing improvements to traffic flow and safety while introducing an appealing, functional streetscape designed to encourage people to walk, cycle, use transit and gather in the City Centre.

Among the more striking elements are the lighting columns, which stand 15 metres (50 feet) tall and feature over 2,000 LED bulbs. The light columns have programmable effects, which can be set to respond to rapid transit arrivals and will celebrate holidays and other special events.

Other enhancements to be featured on the walking tour Nov. 2 include:

  • Multi-use pathway with partial weather protection,
  • Pedestrian improvements such as wide sidewalks, more distinct crosswalks using colour and texture, pedestrian-activated signals and curb bulges for shorter road crossings,
  • Plaza areas with seating and landscaping,
  • Improved functional and accent lighting,
  • Improved signage and wayfinding, and
  • Attractive and open bus stops.

Led by the City of Coquitlam, the Pinetree Way Enhancement Project brought together an extensive project team that included: Wilco Civil Inc., ISL Engineering & Land Services Ltd., EOS Lightmedia Corporation, 3DS Three Dimensional Services Inc., Jack Cewe Ltd., Bay Hill Contracting Ltd., DMD & Associates Ltd., GLE Landscape & Irrigation Ltd., Coquitlam Concrete (1993) Ltd., and Pattison Outdoor Advertising.
