Vote on Name for New Park on Burke Mountain

by Kevin Henkelman |

COQUITLAM, BC, March 30, 2017 – Coquitlam residents have until April 13 to provide feedback on the name of a new park coming to the Upper Hyde Creek neighbourhood later this year.

The City of Coquitlam is developing a 4.4-acre park in the 3000-block of Highland Drive that will include a grass sports field, sports court, plaza, open lawn area, trails and a community garden. Based on research and consultation with Council and area residents, the City has settled on five potential names:

  • Burke Mountain Pioneer Park (recognizing the original owners of the park site and the role of pioneers in the community)
  • Hoigaard Park (recognizing the Hoigaard family, Coquitlam pioneers and the original owners of the site)
  • West Hyde Park (recognizing nearby Hyde Creek and the neighbourhood)
  • Burke Farmstead Park (recognizing the original pioneer farmsteads in the area)
  • Burke Mountain Paddock Park (recognizing the area and equestrian history of the property)

The aim is to select a name that celebrates the historical and environmental site significance of the property, to both the neighbourhood and the city.

Coquitlam residents have until April 13 to rank the five potential names in an opinion poll at coquitlam.ca/newpark. Updates on this and other park projects can be found on coquitlam.ca/parkprojects.

The park is anticipated to open in late 2017, with the sport field opening the following spring.
