Coquitlam U-Turns on Signage

by Michelle Frilund |

COQUITLAM, BC, May 31, 2017 – In an effort to provide better clarity on where u-turns are permitted, the City of Coquitlam has changed its process on installing “no u-turn” traffic signs.

In partnership with the Coquitlam RCMP, the City reviewed where “no u-turn” signs are currently installed, and will be eliminating a number of unnecessary or redundant signs, especially at signalized intersections, that make the maneuver confusing.

The signs, many of which were installed years ago, seem to create more confusion than clarity around where u-turns are permitted. U-turns are only permitted when a driver is able to do so safely, without interfering with any other traffic.

Under section 168 of the Motor Vehicle Act making a u-turn is explicitly prohibited under five conditions:

  • On a curve,
  • Near the crest of a hill,
  • At an intersection with a traffic signal,
  • In a business district, except at an unsignalized intersection, or
  • Where prohibited by a sign.

By reducing the amount of sign clutter and creating more awareness of how to perform these maneuvers safely, it is hoped that drivers will better understand where and when they can u-turn.
