Coquitlam Council Reaffirms Commitment to 2016 55+ BC Games

by Kevin Henkelman |

COQUITLAM, BC, July 7, 2015 – The City of Coquitlam is reaffirming its commitment to host the 2016 55+ BC Games.

However, Coquitlam will be re-scheduling the 55+ BC Games to September 20 -24, 2016 in response to the conflict in timing with the Americas Masters Games being held in Vancouver in August, 2016. The new dates will maximize the opportunity for the 55+ BC Games to be successful and will support community and regional sport.

In 2014, the City of Coquitlam was awarded the 2016 55+ BC Games to be held from August 25 – 29, 2016.

Coquitlam recently learned that the City of Vancouver had been awarded the Americas Masters Games for 2016. This event will take also place in August and will overlap with the 55+ BC Games. Given the similarities between the two major sporting events, Coquitlam’s ability to attract participants, volunteers, sponsors and spectators, would potentially be compromised by the larger, international event being held in Vancouver at the same time.

City Council has approved the new dates for the 55+ BC Games and has directed staff to work with the BC Games Society and the BC Seniors Games Society to address any issues that may arise due to the re-scheduling.
