Preliminary Design of Town Centre Park Plaza

by Kevin Henkelman |

COQUITLAM, BC, July 6, 2015 – The proposed new performance plaza at Town Centre Park is one step closer to reality following Council’s review of the preliminary design.

Following Council endorsement in September 2014, staff have been consulting with the public and working on preliminary planning for the proposed plaza.

Through the conceptual design process, the location has been confirmed as the one previously identified in the 1995 Town Centre Park Master Plan. The site, on the east side of Lafarge Lake, takes advantage of the natural setting, provides an enjoyable and artistic lakeside amenity, while being centrally located within the park.

Existing lakeside trail pathways will be maintained and integrated into the new plaza.

Public feedback has been taken into account in the preliminary detailed design including changes to the shape of the plaza to improve audience view, minimizing grading and civil works, and options for a canopy cover over the performance stage to increase function and convenience.

Staff have also taken into consideration community concerns around programming of activities and events. City staff will be generating policies and event management guidelines with respect to the number, scheduling, size and hours of operating of various events. Management of sound levels will also be analyzed and incorporated into the guidelines and final design work.

Ultimately, the vision for the structure is an outdoor event and performance plaza that reflects the cultural, industrial and natural history of the area while providing a year-round space for recreation and cultural enjoyment. The plaza will be a focal point for large City events such as the Coquitlam 125 celebrations, and Coquitlam Celebrates Canada Day, as well as a variety of smaller festivals and events throughout the year.

Funding will be provided through Bonus Density and Development Cost Charges as well as possible grants and sponsorships.

The project is anticipated to come before Council for final approval in fall 2015 with construction taking place over winter and spring 2015/2016.
