Preliminary Report on Town Centre Park Master Plan

by Heather Escaravage |

COQUITLAM, BC, Jan. 25, 2017 – The City of Coquitlam is moving to the next stage of its Town Centre Park master planning process with the development of a vision and conceptual plan which will inform the future of this park.

Town Centre Park’s existing 1998 Master Plan has guided the development and ongoing evolution of the park space and amenities since the park officially opened in 1989. The updated Town Centre Park Master Plan will guide future development of the park for the next 15 to 20 years.

As one of the City’s most loved parks, it was noted that the Town Centre Park Master Plan is intended to update the existing plan, and would be building on the success and popular amenities of this park, while looking at opportunities to improve the future use and potential offerings to the public.

The public consultation process took place in fall 2016 and included a public session in the Town Centre Park Plaza, availability of the presentation boards in City Hall for two weeks after the session, creation of a Town Centre Park Master Plan webpage, an online survey.  More than 400 surveys were completed during the consultation period and provided a variety of issues and opportunities to be considered in the development of the Master Plan.

Based on the public feedback, a set of proposed guiding principles has been developed and will be further refined based on input from Council. These principles will form the basis for the future vision, and are intended to help guide future space, amenity and funding decisions to continue to enhance and build on the range of amenities and experiences in the City’s premier urban park.

At just over 100 acres, Town Centre Park is one of Coquitlam’s largest urban parks and is a destination for sports, recreation, culture, and leisure activities. It features Percy Perry Stadium, artificial and grass sports fields, a state-of-the-art track and field facility, tennis and sport courts, play areas, including a skate park, bike park, playground and spray park, the Inspiration Garden, a new outdoor festivals and events plaza, and the iconic Lafarge Lake.

The updated Master Plan will now be completed and presented to Council and for public consultation in late spring 2017.
