Coquitlam Drivers Asked to Slow Down As Students Head Back to School

by Robbin Whachell |

COQUITLAM, BC, Aug. 30, 2017 – Coquitlam motorists are reminded to slow down in school zones as children return to school on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The school zone speed limit is 30 km/h between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on school days.  It’s up to everyone to be safe when driving, whether to or past schools, and to be especially mindful of other people on the roads or crosswalks.

The City of Coquitlam has invested significantly in the construction of pedestrian sidewalks and has worked with ICBC,  School District #43, and TransLink to develop safe routes to school for each elementary and middle school in the City.

Safety tips for residents include:

  • Walk your children between home and school when possible.
  • Carpool with other parents.
  • If you must drive, only park in areas where you can legally park.
  • Obey all traffic signs.
  • Be observant of children when you are driving in a school area.

In 2013, Coquitlam launched the school flag campaign to enhance the awareness of school zones.  On school day mornings, bright neon yellow flags are affixed to street poles where the school zone begins at twenty-one schools in the city.

Contact your local school to obtain information about safe travel options, including the Middle School Walk-Bike Program, and best drop-off practices.

Coquitlam schools interested in obtaining the flags should contact traffic technologist, Jannette Guarin at  The Coquitlam RCMP has also published a list of safety information and tips for back to school, available here.  ICBC back to school safety tips, available here.
