Coquitlam Shines at UBCM Community Excellence Awards

by Robbin Whachell |

COQUITLAM, BC, Sept. 29, 2017 – The City of Coquitlam received two Community Excellence Awards at this year’s Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Convention – the only municipality in the province to receive multiple awards.

The City was awarded the following honours:

First Place – “Best Practices, Excellence in Action” category – Productivity Enhancement using Web Mapping
The City of Coquitlam pushed the geographic information system (GIS)  technology beyond its intended capabilities by innovatively applying the GIS data in a specialized web mapping application to support informed decision-making for staff.

These web map applications increase operational efficiencies, streamline business processes, improve data analysis and work programming, and are increasingly seen as the central information dissemination platform.  One example is the digital Culvert Inspection Form, which allows field staff to record culvert condition information on a tablet or mobile device and have it automatically uploaded to a web map. Staff can then use this real-time information to develop rehabilitation programs.

To date, over 25 web mapping applications currently serve the City and are being used to meet a number of business needs from day-to-day operations to long-range planning.

Honourable Mention – “Partnerships” category – Community Inspired Climate Action

In 2010, in partnership with BC Hydro, the City of Coquitlam established a cross-departmental employee-led “green team” called the Coquitlam Carbon Cutters.
This team has hosted more than 30 events and initiatives resulting in reducing approximately 500,000 kWh and $50,000 in energy cost savings annually.

Building on the success of the program, the team expanded their influence into the community by engaging with non-profit organizations that are based in City-owned buildings. Through these partnerships City staff works collaboratively to facilitate the design and delivery of community energy conservation workshops, using creativity and artistic expression to educate and raise awareness on energy conservation, greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction, and climate action. By December 2017, almost 2,000 community members will be reached through this partnership program. All of the programs and workshops have been provided free of charge to the community with support from the City of Coquitlam, FortisBC and BC Hydro.
