A Look Back

Movie fans may be interested to know that the Coquitlam River area was an early ‘Hollywood North’. In the 1930’s, Karl Jacobs, a Canadian born stunt man, married actress, Clara Guiol and purchased the Oxbow Ranch. Renaming it Steelhead Lodge, they built cabins, and fashioned it into a fishing lodge and Hollywood hide-away, where it was rumoured to have been visited by such stars as Clark Gable, Carol Lombard, Errol Flynn, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, and Kim Novak. Local residents remembered seeing a line of luxury cars, some with chauffeurs, making their way along the dirt roads towards the ranch. Several streets in the River Springs area were named after the famous visitors.
