The Mason Bees are Back!
The mason bees have returned to the garden thanks to the dedication of our volunteer beekeeper Pasquale.
Mason bees are solitary nesters who nest in small tubes (either man-made or naturally occuring) and rarely sting (in fact, males cannot sting at all). They are one of the earliest pollinators to emerge in the spring. The cocoons from the garden were collected and cleaned in late fall and stored over the winter (you can also purchase cocoons at a local garden centre in early spring). Make sure there are plenty of early blooming flowers within 100 metres of your location if you plan on raising mason bees this year!

150th Celebration Garden Planting at Blue Mountain Park
The 13th Eagle Mountain Guides and 10th Coquitlam Beaver and Cub Scouts were awarded a 150th Celebration Garden, which consists of 1,000 red and white tulip bulbs to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary in 2017.
The 150th Anniversary Celebration Garden is part of Canada’s Garden Route and will celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary as well as the role of gardens in this history of Canada. Led by the Canadian Garden Council, in partnership with Vesey’s Blubs, Canada Post, Niagara Parks Commission and the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association.
The 150th Celebration Garden also features a replica of the Canadian Armed Forces Insignia Badge, which honours all elements of the CAF, including the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force. It is located at the corner of King Alberta Avenue and Veteran's Way in Blue Mountain Park.
Volunteer opportunities begin in April for the 2017 season. Attend an orientation session to get started! We also have a youth volunteer program orientation session | 13 – 17 years.
