Rodents

Rats and mice are common pests in the urban environment. Signs of their presence include droppings, tracks (foot prints), urine, noises, and chew marks. To minimize rodent visitors to your home and property:

  • Take away the places they like to hide, sleep, and nest by removing any clutter or rubbish from your yard and garage.  Keep your grass trimmed, don’t let vegetation overgrow and keep bushes and trees away from your house.
  • Keep them outdoors by sealing all holes and cracks that might provide access to your home or other buildings on your property.
  • Take away their food and water by:
    • Composting responsibly. Use a rodent resistant compost bin or use your Green Cart for all food scraps.
    • Removing any fallen fruits or nuts from your yard.
    • Feeding your pets indoors and cleaning up any leftover food when your pet is finished eating.
    • Not putting food outside for stray animals.
    • Removing bird feeders or having only one bird feeder that is contained and suspended out of reach.
    • Putting a tray under the bird feeder and removing spilled bird seed daily.
    • Removing any containers from your yard that might hold water and repairing leaky pipes or taps.
    • Storing garbage and food waste inside until collection day.
    • Keeping your BBQ clean.
  • Keep your garbage and food scraps out of reach and in a secure container and location.
  • Keep your Carts clean and use your Green Cart for all food scraps.

If rodents or other pests persist, please call a licensed pest control company. Local pest control services can be found on Yellowpages.ca or other internet search engines.

It is your responsibility to not attract pests to your property. The Wildlife and Vector Control Bylaw No. 4284, 2012 was developed to protect public health by requiring property owners and tenants to prevent their property from becoming infested by pests that may spread disease (vectors).
