Leadership Speaker Series
The Staff Leadership Development Team began as a collection of City of Coquitlam employees. They attended Leadership classes and wished to continue their learning and development through the formation of a Leadership group to discuss topics of interest, opportunities for change and personal development.
During these discussions the team decided to plan and implement a series of high-profile lectures that would be available to the public to help promote leadership and personal development.
This project grew to include employees from all City departments who had not participated in the Leadership classes.
Vision & Mission
We are a collaborative group committed to achieving extraordinary personal and professional development while inspiring and motivating positive change throughout our diverse communities.

John Furlong - CEO of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
Living Leadership based on VANOC's five core values: Trust, Team, Excellence, Sustainability and Creativity
As CEO, John Furlong was the leader behind the team that organized and delivered the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to positive reviews the world over. Helping to contribute to a better, stronger Canada has always been one of Furlong’s most resolute personal goals - he envisioned from the earliest days that the Games would be a real nation builder helping to improve the fabric of Canadian society. IOC President Jacques Rogge remarked about how Vancouver had taken on the Games in a way that was ‘unheard of in the Olympic movement,’ and considered them as belonging to all of Canada, not surprised that the Games had become a catalyst for national unity.
Furlong’s service to sport has landed him with numerous community awards, and in 2009, The Globe and Mail voted him as Canada’s Most Influential Sport Figure. On September 15, John Furlong received the Order of Canada for demonstrating sporting excellence to the world.
Furlong on values-based leadership: "If you are asking people to do things that they don't believe they can do, they have to trust you, care deeply and be truly connected to a meaningful vision."

Simon Jackson – The Power of One - November 2010
Time Magazine’s Hero for the Planet, Simon Jackson, is the 26-year-old founder and Chairman of the 6 million strong, Spirit Bear Youth Coalition and Executive Producer of the forth-coming Hollywood animated movie, The Spirit Bear. Through his 13 years of working to save BC’s endangered white Kermode or spirit bear, Simon has become a model of the power of one.
Jackson gained the support of such high profile figures as Dr. Jane Goodall, J.K. Rowling, and the Backstreet Boys in the process that helped make the Youth Coalition the world’s largest youth-led environmental movement with a global network of more than 6 million in over 70 countries.
Today, two-thirds of the spirit bear’s last intact habitat has been set aside for protection as part of what was the largest land protection measure in North American history, while one third remains threatened. To help protect the remaining habitat, Jackson co-founded Helade Productions to produce, along with the same team responsible for the Lion King, a Hollywood CGI animated movie – The Spirit Bear – slated for worldwide theatrical release.
In the telling of his unique story, Simon illustrated how he overcame roadblocks and skeptics to help make the spirit bear one of the world’s foremost environmental issues. The lessons he learned and the insight he gained is not just the recipe to save the spirit bear, but a tool kit for action for anyone – especially youth – who want to make a difference in our world. Simon’s message was inspirational, motivational, and educational.
