[ARCHIVED] Video and Resources Encourage Residents to Go by Bike

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 25, 2020 – Coquitlam has launched a new video today showcasing its cycling routes and amenities to kick off Go by Bike Week.

Developed by staff, the 4.5-minute video is available at www.coquitlam.ca/cycling and social media as part of the City’s participation in HUB Cycling’s Go by Bike Week campaign from May 25 to 31. Bike-friendly Coquitlam partners with the non-profit HUB every year on cycling-promotion events and activities.

A Virtual Approach for 2020

Healthy outdoor activities such as cycling and walking continue to be encouraged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year’s Go by Bike Week is replacing the usual spring Bike to Work Week hands-on activities with a week-long digital event featuring daily prizes, online classes and tutorials, and partnerships with organizations to promote cycling as a healthy transportation option.

The full calendar of events can be found at www.btww.ca. Participants are encouraged to register for free and log their cycling trips to be entered to win daily prizes. Registration also provides access to online tools for creating routes, inviting team members and more.

Hit the Trails with these Resources

The City’s new video takes viewers on a virtual bike ride along Coquitlam’s multi-use pathways, while also highlighting other routes and cycling infrastructure along with way, with maps for context and location. Additional cycling resources and services in Coquitlam include:

  • Over 80 kilometres of bike routes including bikeways, bike lanes and multi-use pathways;
  • Construction of the Lougheed Greenway along Lougheed Highway – now completed from Coquitlam Central Station to Dewdney Trunk Road and from Chilko Drive into the Riverview lands, with the final leg from Dewdney to Chilko slated for completion later in 2020;
  • Construction of the King Albert Greenway from Gatensbury Street to Hillcrest Street – now completed from west of Schoolhouse Road to Poirier Street, with the new Como Creek pedestrian bridge and the final leg from Poirier to Hillcrest Street (via Lemax Avenue and Midvale Street) slated for 2020;
  • Bike repair stations at Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.) and City Centre Aquatic Complex (1210 Pinetree Way), with tools for changing a flat, adjusting brakes and derailleurs, and other basic repairs and maintenance;
  • TransLink bike parkades at the Lafarge Lake-Douglas and Burquitlam SkyTrain stations;
  • Online copies of the Tri-Cities Cycling Map, featuring hundreds of kilometres of regional routes, at www.coquitlam.ca/cycling; and
  • A brochure promoting safe and courteous biking at www.coquitlam.ca/cycling.
