[ARCHIVED] Park Users Advised to Stay off Coquitlam Lakes

A Danger Thin Ice sign posted on a fence in front of a frozen Lafarge Lake

Coquitlam, B.C., Dec. 20, 2022 – While the forecast may be for extended cold weather this week, Coquitlam park users are asked to stay off the ice on lakes and ponds due to the severe safety risk.

Despite current weather conditions, ice on any lakes or ponds may not be thick enough to safely support people or animals. Ice stability can be very deceptive, with conditions impacted by shade from trees, water turbidity and currents.

By being on the ice people put themselves, their pets, others and first responders at risk.

The City of Coquitlam has signs posted notifying people that they must stay off of the ice; however, these signs are primarily a reminder as the City generally does not permit entering upon, walking, ice skating, cycling, driving or any other access upon a body of water that is frozen in any City park.

Use Caution on Park Pathways and Trails

Interior park pathways and trails may not be cleared so anyone visiting a Coquitlam park should exercise care. Town Centre Park and Mackin Park and all the interior paths around the light displays are an exception but ice can form quickly so caution is always required as temperatures can fluctuate.
