[ARCHIVED] Heavy Rain in the Forecast

COQUITLAM, BC, Jan. 30, 2020 – The weather forecast, which includes high winds and anticipated rainfall over the next few days, has prompted a High Streamflow Advisory by the River Forecast Centre.

The City of Coquitlam is encouraging the following public safety measures:

  • Avoid river and creek banks due to higher than normal water volumes which can be dangerous, or can cause banks to become unstable.
  • Avoid hiking through forested parks and trails, in particular pathways at the bottom of ravines as well as the crest of steeper slopes due to increased landslide risk.
    • The City does not anticipate landslides, but in the interest of public safety, exercising such precautions would be in order.
  • High winds and soil saturation can also topple trees so please watch for falling trees or branches due to wind gusts.
  • Inspect the catch basins adjacent to your property and clear them of any debris (where safe to do so) or other obstructions that could lead to flooding. You can locate catch basins by using this map tool.
  • Watch out for and avoid walking or driving through pooling water in low elevation areas.
  • Please do not walk or drive around barricades on roads as they have been placed there to protect public safety.

The City will also be taking proactive measures to help manage the impacts of rainfall:

  • Public Works crews are ensuring that our critical catch basins and drainage intakes are clear and in good condition.
  • Public Works crews will be out in full force, including both afternoon and evening shifts, to inspect and clear catch basins and culverts with a priority focus on known problem areas and to deal with other reported issues as required.
  • Public Works has additional crews and equipment on standby, ready to respond to emerging situations.

We thank all residents for their cooperation and encourage everyone to stay safe.

For any concerns or to report water issues, please call Engineering and Public Works 24/7 customer service line at 604-927-3500.

Be Winter Wise
Coquitlam’s Winter Wise program kicks into gear each winter to minimize the impact of snow, ice, storms and colder temperatures. While the City works to keep roads safe and reduce service disruptions, residents are encouraged to do their part.
