[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Youth Centres Re-opened to Support Youth Recreation Needs

COQUITLAM, BC, Oct. 1, 2020 – Coquitlam youth can return to recently re-opened Getaway and Landing Youth Centres.

Both centres offer group activities, social support and public information to Coquitlam youth ages 13 – 18.

Fun Things to do at Youth Centres

Pre-registered drop-in activities at The Getaway Youth Centre (adjacent to Poirier Community Centre, 620 Poirier St.), include:

  • Fun activities – foosball, ping pong, pool, video games and more;
  • Friday theme nights once a month; and
  • Youth basketball and badminton court bookings (starting Friday, Oct. 23).

Registered programs include youth engagement committee and monthly workshops.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 3:30 – 7 p.m. Youth must call the front desk at 604-927-6040 to pre-register for a drop-in time slot.

Pre-registered drop-in activities at The Landing Youth Centre (at Pinetree Community Centre, 1260 Pinetree Way), include:

  • Fun activities – foosball, ping pong, pool, video games and more;
  • Weekly paint nights and movie nights on Fridays and Saturdays; and
  • Youth basketball and badminton sport court bookings Tuesday to Saturday.

Registered programs include street dance, art classes, guitar lessons, youth engagement committee and monthly workshops.

Hours of operation are Tuesday to Thursday, 4 – 7:30 p.m., Friday 4 – 10 p.m. and Saturday 5:15 – 10:15 p.m. Youth must call the Pinetree Community Centre front desk at 604-927-6960 to pre-register for a drop-in time slot.

How to Sign Up for Registered Programming

Registration is open for October programs at www.coquitlam.ca/registration 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and by phone at 604-927-4386 weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (except statutory holidays) and Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

To sign up online, go to the Registration web page and look for the Youth section in the sign up widget. Click on an area that interests you to show available program dates and times.

Health Protocols Keep Everyone Safe

Safety protocols to protect both staff and the public, and include restricting access to registered patrons only, enhanced cleaning and changes to some activities. The number of participants is limited to ensure everyone's safety.

Other Opportunities for Youth

The City’s CoquitlamSPIRIT program has compiled a variety of free activities and resources for youth at www.coquitlam.ca/spirit. The dedicated youth section includes activities such as creative art and self care projects, at-home workouts, introduction to hip hop and community resources for youth.

About Youth Strategy

The focus of the PRC Youth Strategy is the delivery of park, recreation and culture programs and services for youth and young adults. In the Strategy Goals and Actions, potential barriers are addressed with the aim to increase equity, inclusion, access and affordability for all young residents.
