[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Reimagines its Block Party Program

COQUITLAM, B.C., July 17, 2020 – Coquitlam residents are encouraged to connect with neighbours safely and take advantage of the $150 grant through the City’s reimagined Block Party Program.

New Requirements During the Pandemic

Block parties are a great way to meet neighbours, make new friends, and enhance safety and awareness in an area. They can also be held safely right now, with appropriate physical distancing and safety measures in place. For ideas on how to host your block party in a safe and fun way, visit www.coquitlam.ca/blockparties.

To limit numbers and ensure physical distancing, the City is not recommending block parties be held on the street this year. Instead, they must take place outdoors on private property – such as a driveway or common area – and have no more than 30 participants. Spaces and number of guests should accommodate physical distancing between families.

To qualify for the grant, block parties must also have a safety plan that adheres to all of the Provincial Health Officer’s orders, notices and guidelines to ensure appropriate physical distancing.

Register Your Block Party with the City

The City encourages neighbours to register their block party at www.coquitlam.ca/blockparties to be eligible to apply for the grant and free Special Event Liability insurance. The grants can be used for food, activities, entertainment or supplies for the party – the City recommends sourcing these from local businesses, such as those listed at www.wegotthistricities.com.

Applications must be submitted at least 10 business days before the party date and include:

  • A safety plan as noted above;
  • The names of two supportive neighbours;
  • The signed Block Party agreement;
  • An invitation to a maximum of 30 people.

Fireworks are only permitted with a permit from Coquitlam Fire & Rescue. Any music played through speakers must end by 10 p.m.

More details are available at www.coquitlam.ca/blockparties.
