[ARCHIVED] City Centre Aquatic Complex Renovation to Begin in February

CCAC Exterior (6) web

COQUITLAM, B.C., Dec. 16, 2020 – A major renovation and expansion of Coquitlam’s City Centre Aquatic Complex (CCAC) will begin in February, bringing more programs and improved services by the end of 2021.

Monday night, Council approved the final design and budget for the addition of 250 square metres (2,700 square feet) of new space and renovation of 1,050 square metres (11,300 square feet) of existing space at the CCAC, including the multi-purpose room, meeting space, the fitness centre and administration area.

The CCAC’s aquatic areas will remain open throughout the construction from February to late 2021, other than the annual maintenance shutdown in September.

Enhanced Services to Meet Increased Demand

The expansion and renovation project is intended to address current needs at the CCAC, which usually operates at or over capacity, while providing more opportunities and addressing future growth in the area and city.

New features will include a more welcoming lobby entrance and new concession, a reorganized and larger fitness centre and studio, expanded multi-use spaces and a renovated administration area. The improvements are expected to increase visits by 65,000 per year and allow for more services and programs, including:

  • 30 more group fitness classes per week;
  • 30 more aquatic leadership programs per year;
  • Up to 20 new spin classes per week;
  • 21 new pieces of fitness equipment;
  • More free weight and stretching space; and
  • More frequent childminding sessions.

The project will also create more opportunities for fitness participation and improved user experience. For example, more orientation sessions will be made available to increase patrons’ comfort with the fitness centre and encourage participation from under-represented groups. Also, locating the new fitness studio at the back of the building will provide more privacy to those taking classes such as mom and baby fitness, yoga, Pilates and dance.

 All services will be adapted to the public health protocols in place at the time of opening.

The $5-million project is funded through Coquitlam’s 2021 to 2025 Capital Plan and is part of the City’s long-term strategy to renew and maintain its recreation facilities to support the growing community.

Operations During Construction

The aquatic areas will remain open during construction except during the regular annual maintenance shutdown in September. Some of the CCAC’s fitness equipment will be temporarily relocated to the nearby Innovation Centre to provide some continuity of service.

More details about construction impacts and programming opportunities at the Innovation Centre will be provided in early 2021.
