[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Rec Facility Hours Extended to Meet Demand

News Flash PSLC

COQUITLAM, B.C., Feb. 16, 2021 – Coquitlam residents will have more time to enjoy safe indoor swimming, skating and fitness at the City’s two largest recreation facilities.

In response to ongoing public demand, the City is extending the hours at Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (PSLC) and City Centre Aquatic Centre (CCAC), giving residents a few more hours each day to schedule pre-registered sessions in the pools, arenas and fitness centres.

All activities will continue to adhere to current Provincial Health Officer orders, with modified access and protocols in place to ensure the safety of the public and staff.

Additional Hours and Opportunities

The expanded hours include:

  • Three extra hours daily (12 to 3 p.m.) in the fitness centres at PSLC and CCAC. Hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week at both sites, including the temporary fitness centre opening at the Innovation Centre later this month during CCAC renovations.
  • Three extra hours of afternoon swimming (12 to 3 p.m.) along with an extra evening hour (8:30 to 9:30 p.m.) most days, with the new hours balanced between PSLC and CCAC.
  • Three additional public skates at PSLC on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Timeslots can be booked 48 hours in advance at www.coquitlam.ca/registration

Popularity Leads to Expanded Service

Coquitlam residents have been able to pre-book timeslots for drop-in activities since last summer as part of the City’s gradual reopening plan. Demand has steadily increased, with many activities now at or near capacity – although capacity is significantly reduced in order to meet current health and safety protocols.

Since mid-December, for example, the weight rooms at both locations have operated at over 95 per cent capacity, while family swims have been close to 100 per cent. Drop-in skating has also been in the 85-to-95 per cent range, and lane and leisure swims in the 70-to-80 per cent range.

City staff will continue to monitor the use of the facilities and make changes to hours and operations as needed, in alignment with COVID-19 health protocols.

Low Drop-in Fees Continue

Coquitlam continues to provide temporarily reduced drop-in fees to encourage residents to take part in healthy, safe activities during the pandemic. The fees are:

  • $1 for child/youth and seniors
  • $2 for adults
  • $5 per family (group of 6)

The lower fees are subsidized through the City's Community Support and Recovery Program, which is supporting the community through the pandemic. For information, visit www.coquitlam.ca/csrp .
