[ARCHIVED] New Youth Centre Space, Same Services and Connections

Getaway Youth Centre New Location

COQUITLAM, B.C., April 6, 2021 – Coquitlam’s Getaway Youth Centre opens April 6 in its temporary new space, offering the same services and connections as always.

One of the City’s two youth centres, the Getaway, recently moved from the Centennial Pavilion to the nearby Poirier administration building at 644 Poirier St. to make way for the Fraser Health COVID-19 vaccination clinic for the Tri-Cities.

Youth can expect the same activities and amenities in the temporary space, which is similar in size to the Getaway’s regular location.

Centres Offer Safe Socializing and Fun for Youth

Like all City facilities, Coquitlam’s youth centres operate with COVID-19 protocols in place, including mask-wearing and physical distancing.

Youth visiting the Getaway, or the Landing Youth Centre in Pinetree Community Centre, can expect a welcoming space where they can hang out, meet friends, do homework and play video games, ping pong, pool, foosball, board games and more.

Youth events also take place biweekly at the Getaway, including art and paint nights. Hours remain the same in the new location: weekdays from 3:15 to 8 p.m. for ages 14 to 18, and Saturdays from 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. for ages 11 to 14.

The Landing is open Tuesday to Thursday from 3 to 7:30 p.m. and weekends from 3:30 to 9:15 p.m. for ages 13 to 18. Youth ages 11 to 13 can also pre-register at www.coquitlam.ca/registration to drop by the Landing on Fridays from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Other Opportunities for Youth

More events for youth will be rolling out in the coming weeks, including activities during Youth Week May 1 to 7.

The City also offers a variety of registered programs for youth, including sports, arts, fitness and other activities, with new options added regularly at www.coquitlam.ca/registration. May and June recreation programs are visible online Monday, April 12, and online registration begins Wednesday, April 14 at 8:30 a.m. As well, for only $1, youth can pre-register for drop-in swimming, skating, court sports and more at www.coquitlam.ca/registration, thanks to the temporarily reduced drop-in fees subsidized through the City’s COVID-19 Community Support and Recovery Plan ($1 for child, youth and seniors, $2 for adults and $5 for families up to four).
