[ARCHIVED] Pop-up Parks Bring Interactive Outdoor Spaces to Coquitlam

Lounge Chair in Park

COQUITLAM, B.C., June 1, 2021 – Pop-up Parks will be appearing in three neighbourhoods this summer, offering fun social outdoor amenities.

The City of Coquitlam is repurposing portions of road right of ways or vacant lots to create unique pedestrian-oriented seasonal parks. The Pop-up Parks will provide public open space for physical and social connections within neighbourhoods while stimulating adjacent businesses.

The first location, the City Centre Pop-up Park near Coquitlam Centre, opened today. Two more Pop-up locations will open in summer 2021 in Austin Heights and Burquitlam.

City Centre Urban Beach Opens Today

The City Centre Pop-up Park is open at the corner of Atlantic Ave. and Baldwin St. next to Coquitlam Centre. Thanks to a temporary donation of the land by Morguard Properties, the City Centre Pop-up Park includes:

  • An urban beach for sandcastle building, sand volleyball games and beach chairs for relaxing;
  • Green space with café tables, space for lawn games and ping pong;
  • An urban boardwalk with social seating and hammocks for lounging and reading, flower planters and gardens.

The Austin Heights location is scheduled to open later in June and the Burquitlam location will open in early July. Visit www.coquitlam.ca/popupparks for updates on the Pop-up Park locations.

Part of Coquitlam’s Community Support and Recovery Program

The Pop-up Parks are provided under Coquitlam’s Community Support and Recovery Program (CSRP), designed to foster community resilience and recovery by providing direct relief to residents, businesses, not-for-profit groups and other organizations.

The CSRP was developed as an umbrella plan that enables the City to provide support at the local level, and in tandem with supports being provided by other levels of government. The plan also recognizes that not all community members who need help or provide value are property owners. The multi-phased framework is designed to support all sectors of the community with projects and initiatives within the jurisdiction of local government.

More information about the CSRP and the programs launched under this initiative can be found at www.coquitlam.ca/csrp.
