[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Reopens Fields and Courts to Sport User Groups

COQUITLAM, B.C., June 15, 2020 – Coquitlam has reopened its outdoor fields and sport courts to sport user groups for modified club use, including skills development and practice.

City staff began reaching out to user groups last week to prepare for the reopening of sports fields and courts. Starting June 15, user groups that have finalized safety plans may resume their allocated field use.

Each club is responsible for educating its membership and ensuring compliance with the guidelines outlined in the Provincial Return to Sport documentation.

Required safety measures include ensuring physical distancing, limiting touch points, frequent handwashing and ensuring that no one with symptoms attends the sport activity.

Responsible Use is Still Required

Coquitlam closed its sports fields to organized sport in March, following the recommendations of the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) for physical distance. The decision to reopen is in line with the PHO’s direction, BC’s Restart Plan and the City of Coquitlam’s Phased Reopening Framework.

In order to resume play on a City field or sport court, clubs must have a Return to Sport plan as outlined in the Provincial Return to Sport documentation and must adhere to applicable public health guidelines.

Informal use by small groups or families can continue whenever fields and sports courts are not occupied by user groups.

Signs posted at the fields will continue to encourage safe and responsible use including:

  • Keeping at least two metres (six feet) away from people from other households
  • Avoiding other groups
  • Limiting time if others are waiting
  • Staying home if sick or exhibiting symptoms
  • Washing hands thoroughly and frequently

Free WiFi

Free WiFi in many City parks (see map at www.coquitlam.ca/wifi) allows Coquitlam residents to enjoy the outdoors and remain socially connected, while being able to access information and participate in the City’s free CoquitlamSPIRIT and other virtual programming.
