[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Reopens Playgrounds and Outdoor Sport Courts

COQUITLAM, B.C., June 2, 2020 – Coquitlam residents are urged to continue to do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 as about 50 playgrounds and dozens of outdoor sport courts reopen across the city this week.

The reopening – which includes all outdoor basketball, lacrosse and volleyball courts along with outdoor fitness equipment – is the second stage of the gradual reintroduction of outdoor amenities that began May 9 with dog parks, outdoor tennis courts, skate parks, outdoor table games and park washrooms.

Coquitlam worked with Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore and School District #43 to coordinate a region-wide playground reopening with schools restarting June 1.

The City has been working to have all amenities reopened by June 1, with staff visiting and inspecting all sites to ensure they are clean and safe for use. Spray parks are still closed, and sports fields are open for informal use by small groups from the same household.

Responsible Use is Still Required

Coquitlam closed playgrounds and other outdoor amenities in March over concerns that users were not following the recommendations of the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) to physically distance.

The reopening is in line with the PHO’s direction and B.C.’s Restart Plan, and relies on responsible use. All users are expected to follow COVID-19 health measures, and parents to closely supervise their children.

Signs posted at the sites will advise:

  • Keeping at least two metres (six feet) away from people from other households
  • Avoiding large groups
  • Washing hands thoroughly and frequently
  • Limiting time on the equipment at busy times
  • Staying home if sick or exhibiting symptoms
  • Disposing of waste properly.

Coquitlam’s Park Hosts will also be on hand at some locations to ensure responsible use.

Most Coquitlam households live within walking distance of the City’s 80-plus parks, many of which feature playgrounds and outdoor amenities. The City is encouraging residents to take advantage of their neighbourhood parks, which tend to be less busy. Park locations can be found on the CoquitlamConnect app or at www.coquitlam.ca/parkfinder.

Free WiFi

Free WiFi in many City parks (see map at www.coquitlam.ca/wifi) allows Coquitlam residents to enjoy the outdoors and remain socially connected while being able to access information and participate in the City’s free CoquitlamSPIRIT and other virtual programming.
