COQUITLAM, B.C., Aug. 5, 2022 – After a brief cooling off, the region expects to see temperatures in the 30-degree range over the weekend and into early next week. In response, the City encourages residents plan ahead, stay cool and be safe.
Where to Cool Off in Coquitlam
During hot weather, there are many ways to stay cool in Coquitlam:
- Everyone is welcome to visit cooled public indoor spaces during business hours, such as the City’s community centres.
- Our parks offer shaded areas and urban forest. Find a green space near you at www.coquitlam.ca/parkfinder .
- There are also many outdoor spaces to enjoy such as pools and spray parks. To find locations near you, visit www.coquitlam.ca/outdoorpools.
If Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a heat warning, many spray parks will operate on extended hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (except for Town Centre Park and Blue Mountain Park which will open at 10 a.m.). Additionally, misting stations will be set up from 1 – 9 p.m. at the following locations:
- Spirit Square (off Burlington Drive, opposite Coquitlam City Hall)
- Mundy Park (off Hillcrest Street, between the playground and picnic shelters)
- Town Centre Park (TD Community Plaza area and by the Percy Perry Stadium)
Stay Safe and Plan Ahead During Extreme Heat
- Avoid activities that require lots of effort, or exercise during the daytime when the weather is hottest.
- Stay hydrated – alcohol-free, caffeine-free and sugar-free drinks are best.
- Seek shaded areas such as parks and trails. To find park locations near you, visit www.coquitlam.ca/parkfinder.
- Check on people at risk – ensure elderly neighbours and those with accessibility challenges or chronic illnesses are not showing signs of heat related illness, and get them to a cool space or seek medical attention if required.
