For Betty, fitness is ENERGIZING! This is her story…
“My name is Betty, and thanks to fitness I have A LOT of energy – so much that my friends call me ‘The Energized Betty.’
I spent nearly half my life trying to lose weight and get in shape. At 50 years old I developed knee problems. Because I was overweight with a short stature, there was a lot of stress on my body. In 2008, I required a full right knee replacement.
As the years went on, the weight continued to creep up, and I was eventually diagnosed with diabetes. By 2014, I weighed in at 265 pounds. With my many medical issues and a height of 5 feet 1.5 inches my doctor warned me that I was a “walking time bomb.” My condition deteriorated my left knee, which required a full replacement as well.
After having both knees replaced, I no longer had an excuse to not exercise. My first step was losing weight under the care of a registered dietitian. For two years I kept a journal and wrote down the details of everything I ate, which was reviewed with my dietician bi-weekly. The weight started to drop. I learned to eat six small meals per day with controlled portions. I went from 265 pounds, down to 186 pounds. I felt lighter and ready to move!
I joined fitness classes at Glen Pine Pavilion in Coquitlam. I tried several fitness classes and found that I enjoyed Zumba immensely! Because I enjoyed it so much, I gave my all each time I attended and finished class soaked.
My instructors Eli and Carolina taught me how to use my feet correctly when doing Zumba to prevent injuries. They ensured I was squatting and lunging correctly, and was aware of my surroundings so I wouldn’t bump into others or fall. Eli and Carolina, I owe it to both of you for making me work so hard and helping me to become fit!
Fitness has become a fun way to do what I love (Zumba) and have more energy. I am now 68 years old, 132 pounds and fit as I will ever be.”
