For Janis, fitness is EMPOWERING! This is her story…
"For many years, I have lived an active life, primarily by walking (well over 10k steps every day), gardening, cycling, snowshoeing, yoga, Pilates, etc. Recently, however, I decided to heed the advice of various experts about the importance of adding strength training to one’s fitness regime, especially as we age.
I have never been particularly attracted to going to the gym, considering it to be a bit of a “LycraFest” where I likely wouldn’t fit in. Despite that, I finally got in touch with Coquitlam Recreation to seek some sessions with a personal trainer. I was assigned to Pam, who has been great to work with – she’s knowledgeable, patient and very supportive. She has created several workouts for me, on the machines and off, and has explained how each one is strengthening muscles that will benefit me as I live my life.
The Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex is fantastic – right from the moment you walk in, it is a welcoming experience. The staff at the front desk are unfailingly friendly and helpful. The gym itself modern, airy and clean, with a large range of equipment. I rarely have to wait to use a machine.
It is empowering to realize that we don’t have to accept limitations just because we are getting older. We can break out of our routines and learn new things. We can stand straight and tall, and keep weight gain at bay. We can pick up our grandchildren and have the energy to play with them. We can combat depression and replace it with positivity. The more active we become, the more activities we can enjoy. It’s worth the effort, believe me.
And by the way, going to the gym is NOT a LycraFest. It’s people at various ages and stages who care enough about themselves to seek a better level of fitness. Come and join us!"
