Freedom of the City MedalFreedom of the City is the highest honour a city may bestow upon citizens to recognize their distinguished service to the community.

To date, Coquitlam has conferred Freedom of the City status on 11 individuals (see below). Recipients of this honour have served the City with distinction, having:

  • Made outstanding long-term contributions to the City,
  • Made a significant improvement in City life and culture, and
  • Been recognized by their peers and outside of Coquitlam.

In British Columbia, the Community Charter gives municipalities the legislative authority to confer Freedom of the City status on their citizens.

Freedom of the City PinFreedom of the City recipients:

  • Receive a parking pass valid for anywhere in Coquitlam.
  • Have the right to be registered and to vote in the election for Mayor and Council.
  • If Canadian, are qualified to be nominated, elected and hold office in the City.
