Centennial Activity Centre Programs Offered At Alternative Sites

COQUITLAM, BC, June 13, 2016 – The City of Coquitlam, through negotiations with School District 43, has successfully identified options and alternate sites to ensure ongoing recreation programming once Centennial Activity Centre closes for renovations on July 1.

Located next to Centennial Secondary School, the Centennial Activity Centre’s (CAC) gymnasium, multipurpose space and office are shared by the City and district through a joint-use agreement signed in 2003.

Since learning in late February that SD43’s planned renovation of the CAC will extend 18 to 24 months, Coquitlam staff have been working to make longer-term arrangements for the sports, dance, fitness, day camp and summer youth programs that typically use the facility. As directed by Council, staff’s objective was to minimize impact to programming and facility users.

This summer’s day camps and gymnasium programs will be moved to Montgomery Middle School, with fitness and other activities that typically use the multipurpose space being relocated to nearby City facilities with no impact to programming.

Staff will continue to work with School District 43 throughout the two-year closure to reduce the impact on the community. This includes providing programming at the CAC Blue Gym starting in September 2016 and relocating other early weekday programs to Vanier Elementary School site. It is anticipated that the negotiated solutions will result in minimal impacts to City costs or programming.
