Upgrades Underway for Mountain View Park and Hartley Field

by Michelle Frilund |

COQUITLAM, BC, Sept. 15, 2017 – Park users at Coquitlam’s Mountain View Park and Hartley Field will soon have an improved experience with construction underway on new park amenities and field enhancements.

Mountain View Park, which includes Hartley Field, is a 4.3 acre park in southwest Coquitlam. Hartley Field is a natural grass field with a baseball diamond, lacrosse box and a washroom building.

The 2013-2023 Sports Field Strategy identified a number of sports fields, including Hartley Field, in need of replacement. Hartley Field is one of the oldest City-owned field in southwest Coquitlam, opened in 1971, and other than resurfacing the lacrosse box in 2013, the field has not been upgraded.

The redeveloped field will provide a new, sand-based, irrigated natural grass field that is able to accommodate multiple field sports such as soccer, baseball and football. The sand-based irrigation will ensure the field can withstand higher levels of play for moderately longer seasons, as well as cope with various weather conditions.

The enhancements to Mountain View Park will cater to a range of ages and recreation experiences and will include picnic facilities, play elements including a child and youth-oriented playground, as well as areas for activities that will appeal to adults including outdoor exercise equipment. These improvements, while not initially included in the sports field project, will significantly improve the park experience for this neighbourhood. The 45-year-old washroom building will also be replaced and made fully accessible. In addition, park accessibility will be enhanced by paving the current gravel parking lot.

Project costs will be partially offset thanks to a $500,000 grant received through Western Economic Diversification Canada’s Canada 150 Infrastructure Program.  Funding for the remainder of the $1.51 million project will come from a combination of Bonus Density funding, a developer contribution for park amenities, and an allocation from the City’s Building Replacement Reserve toward the washroom building replacement.

Construction is expected to be complete in late 2017 and information and updates will be available at www.coquitlam.ca/parkprojects.
