City Supports Community Projects Through Spirit of Coquitlam Grants

by Heather Escaravage |

COQUITLAM, BC, Nov. 29, 2017 – The City of Coquitlam will be disbursing more than $200,000 in support of local organizations through its Spirit of Coquitlam grants, bringing the total award to $8.28 million since introducing the grant program in 2002.

Through the fall 2017 intake for the Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program, the City received 23 grant applications—18 for 2017 and five events for 2018 – from a variety of non-profit and community organizations. From these applications, 20 projects were selected to receive a total of $204,645 in funding (See backgrounder for full list of fall 2017 Spirit Grant recipients.)

For 2017, the City continued to emphasize projects focused on events, celebrations and sports hosting applications, as well as providing community support through funding of initiatives that have public benefits and enrich the community.

Council also adopted an amendment to the grant guidelines to provide full Facility Use Licence funding for tournaments to Coquitlam or Tri-Cities sports organizations serving primarily females or people with disabilities. This change will be implemented with the spring 2018 intake.

All successful Spirit of Coquitlam grant projects must have outcomes that align with the City’s strategic goals, as well as meeting eligibility criteria outlined in the grant guidelines. A multi-departmental staff team reviews grant requests to ensure this alignment. Staff recommendations are then forwarded to Council for discussion and approval.

Since 2002, through this program, the City of Coquitlam has awarded over $8.28 million to over 200 different community organizations. Funding for the Spirit of Coquitlam Grant Program is derived from the Casino Host Agreement revenue. Full program details are available on the Spirit Grant webpage
