Mountain View Park Upgraded for Future Generations

by Michelle Frilund |

COQUITLAM, BC, April 25, 2019 – Southwest Coquitlam park users will have an improved experience at Mountain View Park and Hartley Field, as these two amenities are officially re-open for use following an extensive upgrade.

Upgrades to Serve a Growing Neighbourhood
The park, located in Southwest Coquitlam, had not seen any major upgrades since opening in 1970. With the growing and changing neighbourhood around Mountain View Park, as well as recognizing the importance of parks and green spaces for Coquitlam residents, the timing was right for the park to receive a major upgrade.

The enhancements to Mountain View Park cater to a range of ages and recreation experiences and include picnic facilities, play elements including a child and youth-oriented playground, as well as areas for activities that will appeal to adults, such as the outdoor exercise equipment.

The 45-year-old washroom building was also replaced and made fully accessible. Park accessibility was also enhanced by paving the current gravel parking lot.

The redeveloped Hartley Field within the park provides a new, sand-based, irrigated natural grass field that is able to accommodate multiple field sports such as soccer, baseball and football. The sand-based irrigation will ensure the field can withstand higher levels of play for moderately longer seasons, as well as cope with various weather conditions.

Partnerships Key to Enhanced Upgrades
The total project budget for the upgrades to Mountain View Park and Hartley Field was $2.6 million ($1.5 million for the park and $1.1 million for the field). The majority of the City’s funding was provided from bonus density, with the washroom replacement funded through the Building Replacement Reserve. Improvements within the park were also supported by a $500,000 contribution from the Canada 150 Infrastructure Program. The Rotary Club of Coquitlam provided $50,000 towards the playground equipment as part of their 50th anniversary celebrations.

About Mountain View Park and Hartley Field
Mountain View Park, which includes Hartley Field, is a 4.3 acre park in southwest Coquitlam. Hartley Field is a sand-based grass field with a baseball diamond, lacrosse box and a washroom building.

The 2013-2023 Sports Field Strategy identified a number of sports fields, including Hartley Field, in need of replacement. Hartley Field is one of the oldest City-owned fields in southwest Coquitlam, opened in 1970, and other than resurfacing the lacrosse box in 2013, the field has not been upgraded.
