Coast Capital Savings Steps Up to Support Coquitlam Youth

by Caitlin Osborne |

COQUITLAM, BC, May 2, 2019 – Coast Capital Savings will help provide Coquitlam youth with positive, low-cost activities over the coming months – including a new pop-up lounge at Mundy Park

As part of Youth Week May 1 to 7, the City announced that Coast Capital Savings has signed on as the Summer Youth Partner through the 2019 Coquitlam Corporate Partners Program, which provides sponsorship opportunities to businesses looking to support and connect with the community.

As the 2019 Summer Youth Partner, Coast Capital Savings is partnering with the City in support of the new Youth Pop-up Park and the 2019 Summer Youth Pass – two initiatives that reflect what the City heard from hundreds of youth and young adults when developing its new Youth Strategy.

According to the feedback, young people are looking for convenient, low-cost and engaging opportunities, with flexibility in times and commitment levels. Ideas included “activity destinations” – friendly, inclusive and dynamic environments with concurrent activities taking place.

Building on the feedback, the Coquitlam in Bloom program is installing a trial Pop-up Youth Park near the Mundy Park lacrosse box. The youth park will feature a modified shipping container, portable outdoor furniture, a temporary sand volleyball court, mobile bike track, basketball hoops and a new sports lending library with gear for ball hockey, pickleball, lacrosse and basketball.

It will be a place to hang out with friends, play games, be active, listen to music or join in artistic activities such as weaving, painting and Zen gardening. The nearby forest in Mundy Park will provide options for nature interpretation, photography, yoga and forest bathing.

Youth will help plan and run the site with support from Park Spark staff. Local high school students have been recruited to help set priorities and act as volunteer organizers. Watch for more details on the Youth Pop-up Park in June!

The Coast Capital Savings partnership will also help subsidize this year’s $20 summer passes, which provide additional low-cost recreational options to youth. The passes give youth and children unlimited access to all City drop-in activities from June 14 to Sept. 3, including drop-in sports, the fitness centre and swimming at both indoor and outdoor pools.

Almost 1,500 youth took advantage of the program last year. This year’s passes will be available for sale starting May 8 at signmeup.coquitlam.ca.

During Youth Week May 1 to 7, youth can join in a variety of fun, free and low-cost events every day, including an Amazing Race challenge in Mundy Park on May 3. Information is posted at www.coquitlam.ca/youthweek.

Coquitlam Corporate Partners Help Support Public Services
