by Colleen Smith |

COQUITLAM, BC, May 2, 2019 – Regional Stage 1 water use restrictions are in place starting May 1 and run until October 15.

The City of Coquitlam supports the regional water restrictions to help ensure residents have an adequate supply of water for critical uses such as drinking and firefighting during the dry summer months when water usage almost doubles.

As such, pursuant to Coquitlam’s Drinking Water Conservation Plan Bylaw No. 4838, 2018, effective May 1, lawn watering is only permitted during the following days and times each week:

Residential

  • EVEN numbered addresses: Wednesday & Saturday, from 4 to 9 a.m.
  • ODD numbered addresses: Thursday & Sunday, from 4 to 9 a.m.

Non-residential

  • EVEN numbered addresses: Monday, from 1 to 6 a.m.
  • ODD numbered addresses: Tuesday, from 1 to 6 a.m.
  • ALL non-residential addresses can also water on Friday, from 4 to 9 a.m.

Automatic watering (sprinkler and irrigation systems) of residential gardens, shrubs, trees and planters is permitted any day, between 4 and 9 a.m.

Residential Gardens, Shrubs, Trees and Planters

  • No restrictions on edible plants.
  • Automatic watering systems allowed 4 to 9 a.m., any day.
  • Hand watering (hose with automatic shut-off, water container), soaker hose and drip irrigation allowed any day, any time.

Non-residential Gardens, Shrubs, Trees and Planters

  • No restrictions on edible plants.
  • Automatic watering systems allowed 1 - 9 a.m., any day.
  • Hand watering (hose with automatic shut-off, water container), soaker hose and drip irrigation allowed any day, any time.

Residents can request Water Exemption Permits from the City for properties that have newly planted lawns or that require nematode treatments for European Chafer beetle control. Permits that are issued during Stage 1 or Stage 2 restrictions will continue to be effective through Stage 3, but will be void in Stage 4.

All properties in Coquitlam are required to ensure that they comply with watering restrictions. Property owners found in violation of these regulations will receive a fine between $75 and $500.
