Bring the Party to Your Block

COQUITLAM, BC, May 9, 2019 – Bring the celebration to your block this summer by planning a neighbourhood block party.

The City of Coquitlam is offering $150 grants to encourage residents to plan block parties – fun social events that are a great way to meet neighbours, make new friends, and enhance community safety and awareness.

Coquitlam residents who plan a block party can apply to the City to receive the grant, free insurance coverage and a play kit filled with toys to use at your event. 
Block parties can take place in a variety of locations:

  • On your street,
  • On private property such as a common area or backyard, or
  • In a park (rental fees apply for park bookings).

The $150 grant may be used for food, activities, entertainment, equipment and venue rentals.  

How to Apply

To apply for a grant, block party organizers must fill out a free application at www.coquitlam.ca/blockparties at least 15 days before their event. Grant criteria include:

  • Being a Coquitlam resident,
  • Hosting the block party in Coquitlam,
  • Providing the names of at least two neighbours who support the event 
    and others who will be invited, and
  • Submitting a post-event evaluation and photo of your block party event.

Block Party Play Kits 

Block party organizers can request to borrow our activity play kits to use at their block party. Kits include balls, cones, Frisbees, skipping ropes – and even a rubber chicken! 

Block Party Road Closures

To hold a block party on a City street, block party organizers must request a road closure  through the online application form (local and emergency road access must be maintained – free barricades will be provided). Approved applicants will also receive free special event liability insurance coverage.
