Help Make Buchanan Square a Great Public Space

by Rebecca Vaughan |

COQUITLAM, BC, May 23, 2019 – Residents are invited to provide feedback on options to improve Buchanan Square as a public gathering space focused on people and reflecting the City’s identity.

Options to Improve Buchanan Square
The City is exploring options to enhance and improve Buchanan Square in City Centre to create a more usable public space that reflects the City’s identity and meets the community’s changing needs.  Residents are invited to provide feedback on a proposed design at an information session at City Hall on Thursday, May 30th from 5-8 p.m. City staff will be available to discuss ideas and answer any questions about the space.

An online survey is available at www.coquitlam.ca/buchanansquare until June 5. Survey respondents can choose to enter a draw to win one of three $50 Visa gift cards.

Infrastructure Upgrades Needed
The lower-level of the Buchanan Square plaza also doubles as the roof of the parkade below, which is now nearly 23 years old. The waterproofing membrane originally installed over the concrete parkade roof has a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years, and there have been numerous leaks and localized repairs over the last five years, making a number of parking stalls in the area unusable.  With the necessary repairs to the lower plaza, the City is exploring options to enhance and improve the square as the membrane is replaced to create a more usable and engaging public space.

About Buchanan Square
Located on Burlington Drive next to Coquitlam City Hall, Buchanan Square is a large 0.72 acre public open space consisting of an upper-level and lower-level outdoor plaza above a parkade.  This plaza is an important public interface between City Hall and the Coquitlam RCMP building.
